H.A.H. Bartholomew I of Constantinople is the 270th Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch. He has held this position since November 2, 1991. He is regarded as the primus inter pares (first among equals) in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is seen as a spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians worldwide. He is known for his efforts to promote religious freedom, human rights, religious tolerance among the world’s religions, as well as his efforts to promote ecology and the protection of the environment.
